Something New ~ my words* for this year.
Isaiah 43:19 “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”
I’m retired. My kids and even my grandchildren are adults. Now is my time to relax and enjoy life. Right? It seems God has a different plan.
So what is this Something New that God is doing in my life?
MOPS. Mothers of Preschoolers. MOPS International is a well-known ministry to young mothers. On their page, they say, “Here at MOPS, we are on a mission to celebrate motherhood.
We build circles of women who love each other like family, because raising humans is beautiful and hard, and having each other to lean on is life-giving. That’s why we connect moms all over the world to a community of women, in their own cities, who meet together to laugh, cry and embrace the journey of being a mom.
This is motherhood, and together we can change the world in all the best ways.”
Why MOPS for Newport? Our small town is in a rural area of NE Washington state, on the Idaho border, which is also dotted with small rural towns. Here, many young families, many young mothers live at or below the poverty level and are doing their best to raise their children. The local director of our Head Start program told me many are moving here because the community feels safe~in some ways, an idyllic town, without the crime and dangers of the city. However, we don’t have enough resources for these young families, and they need encouragement, friendships, parenting skills, and someone to come along side them to help them.
I remember being a young mother, married to a navy submarine sailor who was gone a lot. I felt alone, sometimes scared, often frustrated, with barely enough money to get by. Looking back, I can see God’s hand at work all through my life, sending people to help and guide me.
Now, He is calling on me…and perhaps, you. This is going to require a lot of people who care, and a lot of people who will pray for our MOPS program, and who will support it financially.
Will you help these young mothers?
Pine Ridge Community Church is providing meeting space and a portion of our startup costs, but we need to raise $750 to get started and $2500.00 to see us through the first year, to provide safe care for the children of the moms during meetings, for materials to teach life skills, for a store of basics, like diapers and supplies that the moms can earn as they learn. We need local Christian women with a heart to help these young moms. We plan to launch this fall.

*My friend, Robin Lee Hatcher, introduced me to seeking a word each year. I’ve been amazed, over the last 14 years, to see how God has impressed me with a word, then taught me amazing things through that word and His Word. What a blessing!
